Assessor Training

No matter how carefully or rigorously designed assessment tools and exercises are, they will only ever be as good as the assessors using them. To make the best possible selection and development decisions and to minimise the risk of any unfair or unlawful bias, assessors and interviewers have to have the knowledge and skill to do their jobs.

As a firm of occupational psychologists specialising in assessment, we provide assessor training support to a very large proportion of our clients. This training spans the full range of assessment skills for recruitment, including assessor skills, interviewer skills, use of personality questionnaires and use of ability tests. Cubiks’ guiding principles to the design and delivery of training are as follows:

  • Training has to strike a good balance between imparting knowledge and developing skills; full use should be made of practice and feedback
  • Where feasible, training should acknowledge and build upon any pre-existing skill or experience that participants have
  • Where possible, training should not only cover generic skills (e.g. questioning skills for interviewing) but also the specific materials being used (e.g. for Assessment Centre assessors the training should include familiarisation with and practice using the actual assessment materials)
  • Training must have in-depth coverage of diversity issues (and not focus exclusively on providing information about equal opportunities legislation)
  • Training should be delivered in a way that is sensitive to the needs of and working styles of those being trained
